National Jolly Phonics Implementation

In 2024, the Tanzania Institute of Education (TIE) piloted Jolly Phonics in Standard 1 in Dar es Salaam and Morogoro to assess its effectiveness in accelerating pupils' progress in reading and writing in English. The pilot's success led the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology (MoEST) to approve a national rollout. In early 2025, TIE and Jolly Futures signed an MoU for a phased rollout, with TIE committing to print pupil books. In mid-2025, the first phase of rollout was implemented in four regions – Arusha, Tabora, Rukwa and Iringa Regions, training 2,500 Standard 1 teachers and 292 officials in classroom support and monitoring using the Jolly Monitor App. The next phase of rollout is planned for early 2026.
