National Jolly Phonics Implementation

Jolly Phonics was introduced in Zambia in 2017 through pilot programs in Ndola and Lusaka, showing rapid literacy improvement amongst early grade learners. Success led to a wider rollout in Copperbelt Province from 2020–2023, reaching all 515 government and community schools and over 150,000 pupils. More than 3,500 teachers were trained using context-specific materials aligned with Zambia's curriculum. With strong Ministry support, positive impact data, and locally accredited trainers, the program was approved in 2024 for being delivered as a national rollout over 3 years.
